Types of Dentists
In the United States, there are two types of dentist that we see on a regular basis: the DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine). The degrees are actually the same, it's just that different dental schools have different names for the degree. Both are fully qualified to do regular cleanings, checkups, fillings and other basic procedures.
From time to time, you may also see a specialist. Here's what the different dental specialties treat:
- Endodontist — root canals
- Maxillofacial Surgeon — tooth extraction, reconstruction
- Orthodonist — teeth alignment
- Pedodontist — children’s teeth
- Periodontist — supporting tissues of the teeth and mouth
- Prosthododontist — appliances for missing teeth or oral structures
