Better Brushing

You've been doing it almost your whole life - brushing your teeth! But did you know the right method can make an amazing difference in your results?

The head of your toothbrush should be small enough to reach every area of your mouth.

Your squeeze of paste should cover the length of your brush's head - an amount that we at Aquafresh call a "nurdle."

Now, you're ready to begin! Start with the outer areas of your upper back teeth, along the gum line.

Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth, as shown here, and press slightly against the gum.

Using long strokes, roll the brush slowly over the teeth, from the gum line to the tips of your teeth.

You need to repeat each rolling stroke at least 5 times for the same group of teeth before gradually moving toward the front teeth.

Be sure to apply enough pressure so the bristles of your toothbrush reach between your teeth. However, be careful not to be too vigorous. That can damage gums and enamel.

You can use the same technique to clean the inner surfaces of your upper and lower teeth.

However, the inner surfaces of your front teeth need a slightly different treatment. Move your toothbrush lengthwise along the teeth, pulling the entire brush head over the tooth surface. Use the same "press and roll" motion, and brush each tooth from the gum line down.

Finally, the tops of your teeth need a good cleaning. The chewing surfaces of the teeth may feel smooth, but they actually have lots of nooks and crevices where food particles and bacteria can hide.

Using short strokes, brush the tops of the teeth. Don't forget to get the space behind the last molar!

Brushing your tongue gently from back to front helps remove the bacteria that can cause bad breath.

Now, spit out your toothpaste - the fluoride continues to work after you're done!

If you follow this method properly, you should have no trouble brushing for a full two minutes. Your gums will be healthier, your teeth will be better protected from cavities and look whiter, and your breath will smell fresh.
