Choosing a Toothpaste

Fluoride

is an element that occurs naturally in the earth's crust and water.

With the array of toothpaste options available today, it can be confusing trying to find the one that's right for you. Here are a few things to keep in mind.

There are different kinds of fluoride used in toothpaste. Some common ones include sodium fluoride and sodium monofluorophosphate. You may also see stannous fluoride in some pastes.

Did You Know?

Dentists discovered the benefits of fluoride when people from areas with naturally higher levels of fluoride in the water supply experienced less tooth decay than those in areas with lower levels of fluoride.

However, even toothpastes that use the same kind of fluoride may vary in the amount used.

Finally, there's the issue of fluoride delivery. Different toothpaste formulas can optimize fluoride delivery to teeth by minimizing or removing ingredients that inhibit fluoride release.

The best way to choose a toothpaste is to talk to your dentist or hygienist about your particular oral care goals and needs.
