Every mom worries at some point about how to protect her children’s growing teeth. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! The really great news is that there’s no real mystery to looking after teeth and gums. In fact, there are just three simple guidelines to follow:
Diet - Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks to mealtimes. In your child’s first few years, it’s best to avoid cakes, cookies and soda completely. This really does lessen the risk of problems later on.
Brushing - You should brush your children’s teeth carefully and thoroughly twice a day. Children under 6 years old should use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and be supervised while brushing until good habits are established. Ask your dentist or physician about recommendations for children under 2 years of age.
Dentist Visits - As soon as that first tooth appears, start taking your child to the dentist. Taking your child to the dentist every six months helps catch any problems before they appear or become painful.
