Early Brushing

Brushing For Them

When children are little, you have to do all the brushing for them. That can be easier said than done! Here are a few tips that should make the brushing experience in your home a happy and fun one!

Children under 3 years of age should use a smear of a children’s fluoride toothpaste

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head.

Sit your children on your lap when you brush their teeth. It’s easier and it stops them wriggling! Once they get older, you can stand behind them.

Tilt the head up a little and get them to open wide — pretending to be a hippo or a lion usually does the trick! There’s a great game to play here.

Clean each tooth with a gentle circular motion. Make sure you clean all the surfaces and brush right up to the gum line.

After brushing, tell your children to spit. The fluoride can continue to protect their teeth, even after brushing. Note that they shouldn’t be swallowing the toothpaste and in very young children, it can be difficult to get them to spit. That’s why it’s important to only use a small amount, and make sure they are supervised at all times.
